Remember all the elevators along the tracks. A few went up in flames. Here’s a look at one of the Pool elevators going up. If you were there, let us know. We’d love to hear about what you saw that evening.

I remember people asking others to go up and hose down their roof along 4th and 3rd Streets N.W.It was very hot around the old Northside rink where I was so I moved back to the old North Ward school grounds, (now the school division offices) as there were big chunks of burning debris floating down in the wind. One chunk landed on a small dog.I’ll never forget how fast the dog took off yelping. I also remember the old Metroplolitan store burning as well and as the firefighters were putting it out there were people running out of the building with items. The funniest being a large curtain rod with curtains on it!

If this is the one that burned up in 1975 or 1976, I was working for Safeway (the store that is now the Library) and was outside cleaning up the shopping carts. Wow! Look at the flames over the tree tops.

Grew up there and these pics bring back vivid memories. Yes, the great concern was for our beloved Northside rink. Thank you so much for releasing all these pics.

Yes, this one was 1975 or 1976, I remember the wind carried some flaming debris to some of the roof tops in the north end. Grant’s Confectionary store roof caught fire but was quickly hosed down. I remember seeing the flames riding my bike on Tupper street then racing over to 3rd street at Northward school where some of the branches of the old oak street had caught fire. Many people were out with hoses watering down their roofs. Exciting times!
