Portage la Prairie, MB – A local politician is looking to capitalize on the excitement surrounding Portage’s Coke Can bathroom (click here to read original story).

“We can be more than just a piss stop.  We need to let people know they can do #2 too,” campaign strategist, Brighton Early, said.

Local M.L.A., Ian Wishart’s campaign team have proposed the slogan, “Why Shart?”, to promote Portage la Prairie’s potty prominence.

“Let’s permanently end prairie doggin’ in Portage,” Early said.  “By asking travelers the question, Why Shart?, we can remind them to stop in Portage to plop.  It’s another way to tell people  Portage is open for business – their business.”

The new slogan bares a strong similarity to M.L.A.’s Wishart’s last name, and has been seen by some as a clever way to leverage his current campaign and an opportunistic way to expand his name recognition.

“We’re just trying to pile on the momentum,” Early said.  “Having the Coke Can “can” up and running will be great.  But we’d like to see the poop plan expand.  It has nothing to do with Mr. Wishart’s last name and possible marketing tie-ins.  It’s about making Portage great again.”

Whether or not the Why Shart? slogan has anything to do with Wishart’s campaign efforts seems irrelevant, as Portage la Prairie’s desire to become a premiere bathroom destination is quickly capturing the hearts and minds of residents.

tshirt-shart“Why Shart?” is poised to increase Portage pit stops with billboard, televisions, radio and online advertising.  To handle the increased demand there are plans to develop additional washroom seats in the Portage la Prairie Mall and at numerous downtown locations if the city becomes flush with visitors.

Long Plain First Nation and Dakota Tipi are reported to be looking at getting involved on the new campaign as well.  They would encourage travelers to consider stopping at their facilities by adding “We’ve got T.P.” to the “Why Shart?” ads making it a more regional initiative.

Local t-shirt producer, The Screen Door, will be making “Why Shart?/We’ve got T.P.” clothing that local governments will be encouraging citizens to wear to help support the new plan.

Look for Why Shart? billboards to be going up along the highway in the coming weeks.

    Stop making fun of Portage with all your bathroom jokes. We don’t want people taking dumps in Portage. They can hold it until Winnipeg or Brandon. I can’t help but think your bad jokes are hurting our town’s chances at getting things that are good. Strawberry festival was good and then you made fun of it and it gone. You are not the funny you think cause all you are is stupid. I don’t think they should let you stay in the old campbell soups buidling cause you make of that too. Get outta town and move to Oakville.
