“East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’, we’re gonna do what they say can’t be done. We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there. I’m east bound, just watch ol’ “Bandit” run.” – Jerry Reed Giddy-up and yee-haw mother truckers! The eastbound lane of the Trans Canada highway bypass around Portage la Prairie is open. Crews re-opened the new stretch of blacktop this morning and Portage citizens sighed with relief they can now navigate the “Ave” without the hassle of big truck traffic. You could actually “drive” on the avenue today versus waiting behind endless big rigs. Another layer of asphalt will have to go down next spring but the highway folks say they won’t close it completely. Improvements are still being made to the north service road from the Hillside Cemetery to Can-Oat Drive so a lot of construction equipment is still at work in the area. Crews still working on service road improvements. The west-end bypass bridge is still missing a lane after being struck earlier in the year so it will be another construction season before the highway is put right. That is, until the next issue or calamity closes the road sending everything through town again.
