More photos from the Yosh Tashiro archive from flooding in 1955. These shots are from Newton Siding and east of Poplar point.  The Army, Hutterites, Farmers and other volunteers are seen working together to hold back the Assiniboine.

These flood photos depict a spring melt type of flood. A different process than what we’re seeing currently.

The photo was taken on the farm of Nick Janczyn, north of Newton, where about 50 volunteers worked to build up this sagging dike.

Caption: OPERATION DIKE - These Hutterites pass sandbags along to the front of the line where they are placed to repair a broken dike three miles east of Poplar Point, on the south side of the Assiniboine River.  About 75 Hutterites joined with other farmers in the area, plus 12 CD volunteers from Portage, in an effort to repair the 70-foot break.  Today they are reinforcing the bottom of the dike, where water was still seeping through.

But men of the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery took it in good part, day and night.  Here, two of them bolster the sagging dikes.  Left is Bdr. Norman Talylor, La Riviere, Mani., with Gnr. George Brant, Halifax.
