West of Portage la Prairie, and a little Northwest of Austin is Edrans. Not much of a town, more a of a district.  It’s there we met up with Robert Smith, whose Great Grandfather, a homesteader in the area, helped build a one room schoolhouse on Arden Ridge.  Deer Range School in 1898.  The school eventually closed in 1959 due to centralization and declining attendance. However, the school was preserved in the condition it was in, the day it was closed in 1959.  It’s become a bit of a historical miracle.  It’s like stepping back in time.  For those of you old enough to have attended schools like this around here, and there were a lot of them, or remember hearing your parents or grandparents talking about their school days, take a look.  This is exactly how they used to do it.

Originally produced by William Plenty and hosted by Gordon Goldsborough of the Manitoba Historical Society for the MTS TV Stories From Home video on demand channel. It is one of four short films in The Manitoba Historical Society Presents program, still available on MTS TV.
